The Art of Forgiveness
Forgiving is one of the most difficult things to do in life, but it is also one of the most essential aspects of solid relationships—both with others and with self. Here we’ll talk about the art of forgiveness.
What Is Forgiveness?
Forgiveness derives from the word “forgive,” and it simply means to stop having negative feelings towards someone. There’s more to it than that, though. Forgiveness really means to let go of a past mistake—whether intentional or unintentional—and to move forward with your life.
Why Is Forgiveness So Important?
An unforgiving attitude will drive a wedge between you and the other person. But, in general, the person it affects most is you. Studies have shown that refusing to forgive can lead to numerous physical and mental health problems. When you choose to hold bitterness, you are choosing to hold onto negative emotions that will ultimately have an impact on your health and your perspective in life. When you choose forgiveness, on the other hand, this brings about a sense of freedom and peace.
What Does God Say About Forgiveness?
The Bible is quite clear about the issue of forgiveness. We are called to be like Jesus, and that was the chief reason Jesus came and walked among us. God sent Himself as a sacrifice for us, so we could be forgiven of our sins for eternity.
With regards to practical application, forgiveness will look different in different circumstances. That’s why it’s often helpful to seek advice from others about this issue. Stonebriar Counseling Associates provides counseling on forgiveness—as well as many other issues—from a Christian perspective.
